May 8, 1973 - Lyle holds onto lead despite Rare Play interference!

May 8, 1973 - Lyle holds onto lead despite Rare Play interference! Sparky Lyle came on to pitch the 9th and immediately got squeezed by home plate umpire Don Denkinger (Patient rare play - all tough become patient for the rest of the inning/ pitchin change). Lyle walked Rod Carew and Harmon Killebrew to start the inning, and was not happy with Denkinger's interpretation of home plate. Lyle switched gears and managed to get Tony Oliva to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, but Carew moved to third with the tying run. Bobby Darwin came up and was just behind a Lyle fastball, flying out to right and ending the game. Bobby Murcer homered and Roy White singled in the go ahead run for New York. Mel Stottlemeyer got a much needed win and improved to 2-5. Dick Woodson took the loss for Minnesota. 5-8-1973 (Night Game): 1973-NYA (10-15) vs. 1973-MIN (14-8) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E 1973-NYA 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 2 8 0 1973-MIN ...

May 8, 1973 - Broberg 1-hits Brewers! Pete Broberg continued his hot start to the season, hurling a 1-hitter against the tough Milwaukee lineup that has been an early frontrunner in the AL West. He walked to and struck out six en route to his third win of the season against 1 loss. And RBI single by Mike Epstein in the sixth and a two-run home run from Toby Harrah in the 8th supplied the offense. Jim Slaton scattered 10 hits and 3 runs over 8.2 innings and took the loss.   May 8, 1973 - Northrup pinch hit homer turns tables on Royals! Paul Splittorff held the Tigers to 1 run through eight innings, but in the ninth leading 3 to 1, he gave up a lead off single to Bill Freehan and walked Frank Howard to put the tying run on base. Doug Bird got the bullpen call and struck out Duke Sims, Bird threw a wild pitch and the runners moved up, then got Mickey Stanley to fly out to shallow center for the second out. Jim Northrup came to bat in place of Ed Kirkpatrick and turned around a 1-1 breaking ball for a three run home run that gave the Tigers the late lead 4 to 3! Tony Taylor flew out to end the inning. John Hiller came on and pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning to secure the win and earn his 8th save. May 8, 1973 - Rain forces bullpens to go the distance as Angels blow out Cleveland!

May 8, 1973 - Rain forces bullpens to go the distance as Angels blow out Cleveland! Heavy rain in the bottom of the first cut short a scheduled start for Clyde Wright just as he finished warming up, and two hours later is was Lloyd Allen who threw the first pitch to Walt Williams. Fortunately for California, they had already put up five runs against starter Gaylord Perry, and they would add on some insurance in the fifth and sixth to make this rain swept game a blowout before some very faithful tribe fans, only about 400 of whom braved the weather to watch their team get crushed 12 to 1. Bob Oliver, apparently an amphibian, hit two home runs and drove in five runs in the route. Walt Williams had three of Cleveland's six hits in the losing effort. 5-8-1973 (Night Game): 1973-CAL (10-13) vs. 1973-CLE (8-19) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E 1973-CAL 5 0 0 0 2 3 0 2 0 12 14 1 1973-CLE 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 6 2 1...

May 7, 1973 - Reds sneak past Phillies in 12! The Phillies outhit the Reds 15 to 7, but it's the runs that count. Cincinnati had one more of those, defeating Philadelphia 7 to 6 in twelve innings. It was patience that won the game for Cincy in the end as Mac Scarce had control problems and issued four walks and a wild pitch in the top of the twelfth to allow the Reds a pair of go ahead runs. Philly rallied in the bottom half, but Tom Hall was able to work out of trouble and seal the deal.  May 7, 1973 - Fosse Flyout Finished O's, A's Finally Over .500! Tied 3-3 in the top of the 10th, Deron Johnson got things going for the A's with a leadoff walk. Horacio Pina came on to close out the bottom of the 10th, earning his second save in a game spot-started by traditional A's bullpen ace Rollie Fingers.
