First baseman Rafael Palmeiro had 2 base hits as the Baltimore Orioles
defeated the Kansas City Royals 2 to 0 at Kauffman Stadium.
Kansas City was unable to recover after Baltimore went ahead in the top of the
2nd inning scoring one runner on 2 hits. After two were out Andy Van Slyke
doubled. Leo Gomez followed and he reached on an error. Jeffrey Hammonds
then doubled scoring the run. That early run support was all that Mike
Mussina(1-0) required. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.
Doug Jones preserved the game for Mussina, recording his his 1st save. Kevin
Appier(0-1) was hit with the loss. He pitched 9 innings allowing 5 hits and
4 walks.
