April 19, 1948 - Opening Day - Yankees (Reynolds) at Nationals (Wynn)

 Opening Day - April 19, 1948

It took 13 innings for the visiting Yankees and hometown Nats to settle things in the first game of the '48 season, and it was the bat of the bat of the Yankee Clipper that did the settlin'.

Tommy Henrich led off the top of the 13th with a base hit, and Bobby Brown singled him over to third with no one out for DiMaggio. Joe lofted a deep fly to right that allowed Henrich to tag up and score the go ahead run. Ray Scarborough elicited an inning-ending double-play to escape further damage, but the Yanks led 3 to 2.

Tommy Byrne came out for his second inning of work and managed three ground balls from Coan, Vernon, and Culberson to seal the Yankee win.

Early Wynn and Allie Reynolds both pitched well, and it was Reynolds home run that helped his own cause in the early going, tying the game at 1-1 in the 6th after DiMaggio had started the scoring early the same inning with a rbi base knock to score Stirnweiss.

DiMaggio was named player of the game. He went 1 for 5 with sac fly and drove in two of the three Yankee runs.
