Jackie Robinson led off the game with his 2nd home run in as many games, and Dick Whitman went 4 for 5 with two doubles and a stolen base to lead the 11-hit Brooklyn assault on Giant's pitching. Whitman accepted the New York Daily News Player of the Game.   April 21, 1948 - Detroit (1-0) at Chicago (0-1) - (Trout at Grove) Both teams scored early - five in the first for the Tigers, 4 for the Sox - but it was the Tiger bats that kept on keepin' on. Chicago starter Grove didn't make it out of the third. In the end, five White Sox pitchers gave up 11 runs on 10 hits in a game that was never close after the 3rd inning. Neil Berry filled up the boxscore to take home the International Business Machines Player of the Game with 2 hits, 2 walks, 2 runs scored, and 3 rbis.   April 21, 1948 - Yankees (2-0) at Senators (0-2) (Raschi at Haefner) Tommy Henrich tripled and scored on a Johnny Lindell grounder to put the Yankees up 1-0 after half an inning. Billy Johnson's triple off the wall in the second plated Souchouk with the Yank's second run, and Henrich singled home Rizzuto in the 4th to make it 3-0 New York. Vic Raschi cruised through six before tiring in the 7th. He handed the ball off to Page with the bases loaded and 2 outs, and Page struck out Culberson to end the threat. Page pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to secure the series sweep for New York.   April 20, 1948 - Opening Day - Boston (Sain) at Philadelphia (Leonard) The Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 3 innings, so when the Phillies put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the 5th, Phillies manager Ben Chapman decided to pinch hit Blatnik for Dutch Leonard to try and get something going. Blatnik cam through with a 2-run single, making it a 4-2 game after 5. Unfortunately, the move was a double-edged sword, as the Philly bullpen immediately handed up a 4-run 6th to the Braves, who would never look back. Johnny Sain went the distance for his first win. Robinson added another rbi on a seventh inning single to lead a nine hit, seven run Dodger attack. Rex Barney was solid until the 8th, when fatigue led to 5 Giant runs, capped by Walker Cooper's 3-run home run to make it a 1-run ballgame.
